Who is the Garrett Ace 150 Best Suited To?
The Garrett Ace 150 is definitely more suited to those starting out. In fact, it was made entirely for that purpose. So if you’re an experienced detectorist, I really can’t recommend it. You won’t get the additional tuning options and reach that you are looking for.
For the beginner, however, it is perfect. Very simple features, changeable batteries, and a big LCD screen to make everything clear. It can be broken up into smaller pieces for carrying and you can change its length depending on how tall you are.
What’s more, even if you aren’t a beginner yourself, it could be perfect for your children! It is also relatively inexpensive when compared with more advanced models which makes it a good fit for children who have left their toy metal detector years behind and are ready for their first real steps into detecting.
How Does the Garrett Ace 150 Perform?
Keeping in mind that this is a beginner metal detector, the Ace does a great job. While you won’t be detecting much under 8’’, it doesn’t claim to do so either. It comes in at a reasonable price, and you’ll find more features here than in other detectors at the same price range.
The Ace 150 is not waterproof, so a dry sunny day is your best bet. A simple plastic bag or waterproof material will solve that problem, however. Other than that, the Ace is great for what you’re paying for.
Features & Benefits
The Garrett Ace 150 comes with a wide range of features for a metal detector at this price range. The Ace 150 is primarily made with beginners in mind. So, the vast majority of these features are geared towards ease of use. Instead of the usual ten minutes fumbling around with all the buttons, you can get straight to work without any hassle.
Large LCD Screen
One of the most important things, when you’re starting out in detecting, is to be able to get straight into it. When you start fumbling around with your detector, trying to figure it out for the first time, it’s pretty likely that you’re going to mess something up.
Especially as a newcomer.
With the large LCD screen provided, everything is simple and easy to do. With the press of a few buttons, you can be on your way out into the fields for a bit of detecting. The pushbutton controls with ‘One-Touch’ operation allow you to make changes quickly and easily.
Possibly the most useful thing about the Garrett Ace 150 is that it can be broken down into 3 pieces. Some metal detectors can be big, hefty pieces of equipment. The fact that you can essentially pack away this detector should be a big bonus in anyone’s eyes.
Trying to find room for a detector in the car can be quite frustrating. So it’s an absolute joy to be able to break up the Ace and throw it in the back.
Low Battery Indicator
Having your metal detector turn off halfway through a walk is extremely frustrating. And it’s a complete waste of time for everyone involved. This one will let you know when the battery is running low so that you get your replacement ready in time.
The Ace 150 takes 4x AA batteries for a full charge. This means that it is very easy to keep running, and the batteries can also be changed out ‘in the field’. The low battery indicator is especially helpful for newcomers. It makes sure that nobody gets interrupted through an exciting find and ends up throwing their metal detector away.
Adjustable Arm Cuff
Working with a metal detector for a long amount of time can really put a strain on your arms. The adjustable arm cuff that the Ace provides helps make sure that you can go on enjoying your hobby for longer.
There is nothing worse than getting a crick in your arm during a search. If you’re working for long periods in the wind or rain, it’s certainly something that you’ll notice. Being comfortable using your metal detector is important, so the adjustable arm cuff really is a great feature. This model can be adjusted from 42″ to 51″ (1.06m – 1.29m).
The Garrett Ace 150 comes in at a shockingly low weight of 2.7lbs (1.2 Kgs)! It feels like you aren’t carrying anything at all. Expensive, heavy metal detectors can really start to weigh you down, but this one is the opposite.
With such a weight, you can detect all day and night without even noticing you’re doing it! Which, depending on whether you have work the next morning, may or may not be a good thing.
When buying the Garrett Ace 150, you have to keep in mind that it is made for beginners. If you’re an experienced detector, you’ll quickly feel limited by how much you are able to tune it and how deep it can detect.
Although the Ace comes with tons of features for you to use, it is lacking in power. Only able to pierce the ground up to 8’, though reports do vary, it could be difficult to find certain items.
So remember! If you aren’t a beginner or looking for a simple, easy piece of equipment, look elsewhere! The Garrett Ace 150 is not for you.
